Hilary Duff Is What Dreams Are Made Of

Hilary Duff Is What Dreams Are Made Of

I’m waking up to a dream sequence. Her team told me this would be audio only because of her frenetic travel schedule. She’d just landed in Auckland for the New Zealand and Australia leg of her tour. Then the name Hilary pops up on the Zoom, she turns on her camera, and I see the most bubbly ball of energy, with her long, sun-streaked locks in loose waves. I freak out. The camera stays on for the whole hour, and it feels like chatting with a bestie. She’s completely locked in, letting her hair down, and I get to ask her all the questions I’ve always dreamt about asking her, probably on behalf of all the fans of our generation who grew up with her.

Though technically, this is our second meeting. In 2014, I brought a first date to her “All About You” premiere, crashed her step-and-repeat pretending to be press, and had him snap our photos. When he asked to see me again, I apparently replied, “can you send me my photos with Hilary?”

Back then, I had no idea the girl in my photos was, in her words, “hanging on by a thread.” Now, more than a decade later, she’s pulled off the pop comeback of the year. Her album luck… or something debuted at No. 3 on the Billboard 200, her highest-charting album since 2007, and she’s played 50 shows so far, many of which sold out in hours. She’s already done New York and London, two cities straight out of “Wake Up,” and Paris is coming in May. Maybe Tokyo? Her crowds are full of the same queer kids from 2004, now adults in butterfly clips and baggy jeans. (She’s been a ride or die for our community since her iconic “That’s So Gay” PSA.) And let’s be clear, she’s not a nostalgia act. Everyone in the audience knows the new album too.

The thing about Hilary is that she was one of the biggest child stars of a generation, and that didn’t come with any guarantee she’d come out the other side in one piece. Playing Lizzie McGuire gave her everything and took a lot out of her. She remembers thinking, “I’m fucking done with you. I want people to see me.” She adds, “It was so weird being a child star and trying to cross that bridge into adulthood, being taken seriously, coming off Disney Channel.” She yearned to break free from a character that never grew up.

And she did. Hilary is proof the role that made you doesn’t have to be the one that defines you.

On her own terms, she made the most honest album of her career, about marriage, desire and the parts of growing up nobody warns you about. She let us into the messy, complicated parts, and we saw ourselves in them. Today, she finally feels the respect from the industry, including from people she felt were hard to please her entire career. Hilary thought she was healing herself, but in the process, she healed us too.

She’s also made peace with the internet turning her most earnest moments, like the “With Love” dance and that PSA, into memes. The gays turned them into camp classics, out of love. “Now I’m like, oh, got it,” she says. “I can play along, too.”

Is it luck? She’d say so. But a lot of it is something of her own: smart decisions, and the family she built, which gave her the foundation to say, “I don’t give a fuck.”

“I really do mean it to inspire people who feel stuck, or who haven’t done something they wanted to,” she says. And she’s not done. She’s already planning more music as she takes the tour around the world, and she’s eyeing a return to acting, whether a book adaptation, a limited series or a movie. “Now that I know that I can.”

What Christmas Dreams Are Made Of: Hilary Duff Announces Holiday EP Featuring 3 Original Songs

What Christmas Dreams Are Made Of: Hilary Duff Announces Holiday EP Featuring 3 Original Songs

Christmas is coming early for Hilary Duff‘s fans. The singer-actress announced Wednesday (Oct. 21) that she’s releasing her very own holiday EP, featuring three original songs.

Set for release on Friday (Oct. 23), Holiday Things will also include a cover of “Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas” and an updated version of Duff’s cover of the seasonal Wham! hit “Last Christmas” that appeared on her 2003 Christmas album, Santa Claus Lane. The new original tracks are titled “All You Want for Christmas Is Me” — a play on Mariah Carey’s iconic 22-week Billboard Hot 100-topping smash “All I Want for Christmas Is You” — “I Want (A Few Small Things)” and “I Guess It’s Christmas.”

“I guess Christmas came early … Holiday Things is yours this Friday 10.23,” Duff wrote on Instagram.

The project continues a massive musical renaissance Duff has experienced over the past year. Her first album in a decade, Luck … or Something, debuted at No. 3 on the Billboard 200 and has fueled her ongoing Lucky Me arena tour. She recently added a slew of extra dates, expanding the trek through November 2027.

“When I think about this era, for me it took a lot of guts,” she said in a recent chat with Billboard. I showed up for sure, but the only reason it’s working is because everyone’s showing up, and I don’t even exactly know why, but I’m really excited to see it and feel it and feel something that I’ve gotten a little taste of now. Obviously it’s in my body from before, but I’m such a different version of myself than I was back then, so it’s really magical to do this again.”

After Luck … or Something, the Lizzie McGuire alum followed it up with an EP of re-recorded versions of her past nostalgic hits titled (Mine). On it were reclaimed editions of 2000s Hot 100 hits such as “Come Clean,” “What Dreams Are Made Of,” “Wake Up” and “So Yesterday.” The star’s most recent release was a single called “CATastrophe” for the upcoming Cat in the Hat movie.

Duff is also set to sit down for a conversation at the Billboard Live Music Summit held Nov. 10 in West Hollywood. She’ll also be honored with Billboard‘s Outstanding Pop Tour of the Year award at the ceremony.

Hilary Duff Jokes It’s Her ‘Life’s Work’ to Ensure Her Daughter Banks Doesn’t Have a Back-to-School Hair ‘Meltdown’

Hilary Duff’s daughter is back at school — and the actress has a new job to add to her résumé.

On Thursday, Aug. 29, the Lizzie McGuire alum, 36, shared a carousel of photos on her Instagram as her daughter Banks, 5, headed to her first day of kindergarten. In the sweet snaps, Banks can be seen wearing a pleated khaki skirt, white shirt and a navy sweater, and smiling as she sported a tan backpack and boots.

Other photos show Banks holding up a sign that reads “My First Day of Kindergarten,” which also listed her favorite color as light blue, her favorite food as the Goop Kitchen pizza and noted she wants to be a teacher when she grows up.

“My queen. My boss. My CEO. My top dog. My big cheese. My kindergartener. Let’s go baby girl!!!” Duff wrote in her caption.

“How does she know it’s my life’s work to chase her around with the hair brush all morning to make sure we don’t have a melt down [sic] about a hair out of place????” she joked.

Duff shares her baby daughter Townes, 3 months, Mae, 3, and Banks with husband Matthew Koma. She is also mom to son Luca, 12, whom she shares with ex Mike Comrie.

In July, Duff shut down rumors that the birth of her baby daughter Townes in May was unplanned. The mom of four appeared on the Informed Pregnancy Podcast, where host and prenatal chiropractor Dr. Elliot Berlin told her that when anyone announces they have four kids, “Everyone’s first question is ‘Was that an accident?’ ”

The actress laughed before answering, “No, we actually planned this baby.” She added, “I think I’m one of the most impulsive-thought-out people I know. Like, I do hash things out, but I haven’t really shared with anybody yet, so by the time I’m ready to get pregnant, I’m like basically pregnant.”

The mom of four then emphasized that having another baby was just as much her decision as Koma’s.

Hilary Duff Welcomes Baby No. 4, Daughter Townes

Duff is already mom to son Luca and daughters Banks and Mae

Hilary Duff’s little one has arrived!

The Lizzie McGuire alum, 36, has welcomed her fourth baby, her third with husband Matthew Koma, on Friday, May 3, she announced on Instagram Tuesday. Sharing photos of her home water birth, the actress took a moment to honor her newborn daughter in her caption.

“Townes Meadow Bair 🧸 , now we know why she made us wait so long…She was perfecting those Cheeks!” Duff wrote. “I Have been dreaming of holding you in my arms for months and the past 5 days of getting to know you, stare at you and smell you has been pure moments of magic.”

“We all love you like you’ve been here all along beauty. 5/3/24,” the newly minted mom of four wrote in her caption.

The couple share daughters Mae James, 2½, and Banks Violet, 5, and co-parent Duff’s oldest, Luca Cruz, 11, with her ex-husband, Mike Comrie.

Duff announced on Instagram that she was expecting her third child with Koma in December 2023 in her family’s Christmas card, which featured a photo of her cradling her stomach.

“So much for silent nights. Love, the Duff-Bair-Comrie Crew,” the front of the card read, while the back confirmed the news: “Buckle up Buttercups, we’re adding one more to this crazy bunch!”

Duff loves the “mayhem” of raising three kids, she told PEOPLE in a 2021 interview shortly after welcoming Mae.

“I have help, but babies just want their mom,” she said at the time. “Even Luca is still like, ‘Mom, Mom, Mom.’ Mom cooks the thing the right way, and Mom packs the bag the right way. It’s crazy.”

The “Come Clean” singer” also said that she is “so in love with all my kids” — and the busyness that comes with it.

“I love when everyone’s full of energy and the house is buzzing. You never know what the day is going to bring or what your kid’s going to say,” she told PEOPLE. “We’re in the thick of it, and it feels good.”

Hilary Duff Shares Sweet Photos with Her Family of Five ‘Before That Changes Forever’

Hilary Duff is embracing family time before welcoming her fourth baby.

On Friday, April 26, the Lizzie McGuire alum, 36, shared a series of photos on her Instagram with her family of five. In one sweet photo, the pregnant star wears a pink shirt bunched up to reveal her belly, sitting next to son Luca and holding hands with husband Matthew Koma, 36.

Next to Luca, daughter Banks Violet, 5, sits with her hands on the ground, wearing her hair in adorable bows. On the other side of Koma, the couple’s daughter Mae James, 3, stands, wearing a white dress.

Other photos show the family of five throughout the year, spending time at a beach, celebrating birthdays and posing together at Christmas.

“Some random pics of the 5 of us before that changes foreverrrrr,” Duff wrote in her caption.

Last week, Duff shared a message to her followers, asking them to respect her privacy as she gets ready to welcome her fourth baby.

The actress posted a message on her Instagram Stories as she approaches her due date, writing, “Hi friends — this is meant in the kindest tone (I promise) … I am no longer responding to texts or dm’s about ‘when baby is coming.’ ”

“I know everyone is checking in with love and humor, however, trust me…nobody wants it more than me!!!!! Babies come when they are ready. I am trying my best to be patient!” she continued. “The days are long and uncomfortable. Promise I will let you know. ❤️.”

Hilary Duff Is Trying Acupuncture & Salad To Induce Labor With Baby #4

Hilary Duff is nearing the end of her pregnancy with her fourth baby, and she’s pretty much done with the whole thing. She recently shared an update, admitting that she’s ready to give her baby an “eviction notice” by using acupuncture. She’s being gentle with her eviction notice, to be fair, but ultimately Duff is just ready to stop being pregnant.

The Lizzie McGuire star, who is mom to 11-year-old son Luca with ex-husband Mike Comrie along with two daughters, 5-year-old Banks and 3-year-old Mae with husband Matthew Koma, announced she was expecting her fourth baby in December with a family Christmas card. While she did not share her due date or the sex of the baby at the time, Duff already had a baby bump and appeared to be a few months into her pregnancy. Now it is April, four months later, and Duff said she is enjoying a “slow week” while also trying out acupuncture in an effort to “gently trying to give baby the eviction notice,” as she shared on Instagram on Tuesday. Acupuncture is believed to potentially help induce labor as a “complimentary therapy,” according to the National Library of Medicine, and could help with “cervical ripening.”

If Duff’s next post is a birth announcement, I guess that will mean this acupuncture worked.

It looks like Duff is doubling down on trying to induce labor, in fact. Her second photo was a partially-eaten salad, and some of her followers wondered if this might be the special labor-inducing salad from Caioti Pizza Cafe in Studio City, California. That famous salad, which is made with a mix of romaine, watercress, walnuts, and gorgonzola, with a herb-balsamic vinaigrette, is rumored to induce labor.

Either way, Duff’s followers approve of her methods. “I’m an acupuncturist and have been called in to birth centers and homes all the time to get those babes OUT!” wrote one follower. “That salad got my daughter out in less than 48hrs. Sending those vibes your way,” wrote another.

As much as Duff wants to have that baby and be done with her pregnancy, she is also savoring these final days of being able to seek out some peace and quiet. She took to her Instagram Story to share a photo alongside a Cadillac, which she has been driving around to enjoy “the peace and quiet these last few weeks.”

This is not Duff’s first rodeo, she knows how much life is about to change. With or without an eviction notice.
